Based on a design by Colonel Christopher Gadsden and given to Commodore Esek Hopkins, commander of the new Continental Fleet, as his personal distinctive banner when the U.S. Navy first started putting ships out to sea to intercept British ships carrying war supplies to the British troops in the colonies.
Also referred to as the "Don't Tread On Me" flag.
