This is considered to be the first national flag of the United States of America. Used from 1775 – 1777. Was raised for the first time in December 1775 on the “Alfred”, a fighting vessel. A year later, it was considered the official flag of the American Naval forces. On New Year’s Day 1776, George Washington ordered it raised on Prospect Hill in Somerville, MA to celebrate the birth of the Continental Army.
